Recently I was commissioned by the owner of Fine Interior Finishes to document some of his work in the recently restored Book Cadillac Hotel in downtown Detroit.
This storied hotel just went through a $200 million restoration. Originally built in 1924, it had the distinction of being the tallest hotel in the world and the tallest building in Detroit. Many dignitaries entered its doors and graced the Book with their presence. Through the years, though, it followed Detroit through its troubles; changing hands numerous times and finally closing in 1986. It remained closed for 20 years, falling victim to neglect and trespassers.
Now, however, the Book Cadillac enjoys a new lease on life.
The room pictured here is in the Spa1924Grille. Eric Astrup, owner of Fine Interior Finishes, had the distinct privilege of doing the finishing work in the Champagne Bar. His unique blend of black and gold throughout the walls and ceiling give this room the elegance and distinction that it deserves. That elegance and uniqueness is exactly what I wanted to capture on this project. In person, the room has very low level lighting, which is an appropriate ambiance for a champagne bar. However, that same ambiance made it a challenge to capture the tones and textures in his work, so some creative flash was used to bring out the details. His work is an amazing complement to this restored treasure, and I was honored to be able to document this particular project.
Be sure to see Eric’s website for other work and projects that he has been involved in.
