One of the most calming experiences that people enjoy is a sunrise. When that sunrise happens over an ocean while enjoying a vacation on a beach, well, so much the better.

This shot was captured on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina, just as clouds were rolling through the morning sky. The clouds and sun crossed paths at just the right time to create the amazing rays that you see here. Since shooting directly into a bright light (like the sun) presents challenges for a camera in washing out darker details, this picture is actually a combination of three different exposures – all taken at the same time, with the best parts of each exposure recombined later. No camera will ever match the human eye, of course. But shooting with this technique allowed the detail of the rays, the beach, and the water to remain visible, just like you would see in person.

It was a beautiful, tranquil sight – and one that I’m happy to be able to share.
