Girl Time In the D

Here was another fun image using a kids toy. My wife had gotten these for our daughters, and we thought it might be fun to use them as a prop in a downtown setting. We tried a number of different things, but quickly discovered that the small size made it tricky to look correct proportionally in a grown up setting.

The other thing that complicated getting shots was the two dimensional nature of a paper doll. You’re pretty much limited to getting straight on shots. So we changed how the hat sat on its head and placed it so the sun was shining on the front. This cast the right shadow to help the depth of the picture. The blur was achieved by playing with camera settings until we got the doll in sharp focus. Getting the shot quick enough before the wind blew them over proved to be a challenge as well.

But in the end, we were happiest with this shot. It was taken on Woodward Ave in downtown Detroit, right along where there are some revitalized shops and lofts. Like the other toy images, it was good practice for problem solving during commercial shoots and exercising some creativity.
